Honoring the memory of the heroes of the Revolution
On Friday, December 18, the commemoration of 31 years since the tragic passing away of the two rugby players who died in the days of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989, Radu Durbac and Florica Murariu, will take place at the Monument of the Heroes of the Revolution in the Steaua Ghencea Sports Complex.
In the context of the situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the specific measures imposed, the ceremony will take place in a limited setting.
The two great emblematic players of the Army Sports Club "Steaua Bucuresti" and of the national team, heroes of the nation, fell on duty during the events taking place in the area of the sports complex. Their memory will be eternal for those who knew them and who commemorate them year after year with deep respect.
Radu Durbac played over 50 matches as a defender in the Romanian national team in the '70s for which he scored over 200 points, of which 30 times from penalty kicks, 28 times from transformations, 8 times using the complex procedure of dropgol, placing the ball in the opponent's goal 9 times. His debut was recorded on September 27, 1968, in a match against Czechoslovakia, which Romania won 18-9, in the FIRA Cup - European Championship. He was part of the great team of "oaks" that won 15-10 against France in Bucharest in 1974 and contributed to the military team winning several titles of national champion, after which he transitioned to a renowned coach of the red-blue team.
Florica Murariu was the captain of Romania's first national team, wearing her shirt in 70 matches. She played in the most convincing victory in the history of the national rugby team, 100-0 with Bulgaria, in Burgas, in 1976, and was on the field for the memorable victory against France, 15-0, in 1980.
