30 years since the Romanian Revolution in December 1989
Thursday, December 19, at the Monument of the Heroes of the Revolution in the Steaua Ghencea Sports Complex the 30 years commemoration since the tragic death of the two rugby players took place, who died in the days of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989, Radu Durbac and Florică Murariu.
The two great emblematic players of the Sports Club of the Army "Steaua București" and of the national team, heroes of the nation, who lost their lives during the unfolding events in the area of the sports complex, and respect. Their memory will be eternal for those who have known them and who commemorate them year after year with profound respect.
The solemn ceremony began with a memorial service officiated by a priest assembly, after which the colleagues of the dearly departed, family members, representatives of the Romanian Rugby Federation and sportsmen of the Steaua club lit a candle for the eternal remembrance of Radu Durbac and of Florică Murariu. This ceremony has become a tradition for our club, a duty of honor, being celebrated every year.
Radu Durbac played over 30 matches as a defender in the Romanian national team in the 1970s and was part of the great team of “Oaks" who won the 15-10 victory over France from Bucharest in 1974 and contributed to the win of the military team of several national champion titles, after which he became a reputed coach of the red-blue team.
Florică Murariu was the captain of the first representative of Romania, wearing its shirt in 70 matches. He played in the most definitive victory in the history of national rugby, 100-0 with Bulgaria, in Burgas, in 1976, and was on the field for the memorable victory against France, 15-0, in 1980.
